Several years ago, I applied for a prestigious overseas opportunity that could take my career to the next level.
After a two-year application process, I received an email: Application Status: DENIED
Their reason? My preexisting health condition—sickle cell disease—was deemed too “risky” for the demands of the job. This inherited blood disorder, characterized by crescent-shaped, oxygen-deficient red blood cells, can trigger intense episodes of pain called sickle cell crises.
My condition was labeled a “liability,” and it stood between me and my dream.
However, I wasn’t committed to a dream.
I was committed to a VISION.
There’s a key difference: a vision has purpose, clarity, and actionable steps.
In my appeal, I articulated my purpose: to leverage my professional background and lived experiences to empower others and drive organizational change. I explained how managing a chronic condition had strengthened my leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities. I argued that my health challenges weren’t a liability—they offered unique assets I would bring to the job every day.
Ultimately, I made the case that what others viewed as a "weakness" was actually my greatest strength—and this convinced them to approve me for the opportunity.
If I could do it, so can you. I've seen what gets results—and I'd love to share those insights with you.
